Grizzly Bear’s new song, ‘Sleeping Ute’ was posted on the bands website in early June as a sneak preview to their highly anticipated fourth album set to be released in September. The band are basking in phenomenal success having toured with iconic British rock band, Radiohead, played major festivals including Lollapalooza and even becoming bum chums with music legend, Paul Simon accompanying him onstage for five performances. Grizzly Bear count notorious rapper Jay Z as a firm follower amongst their far-reaching fanbase, he hopes bands like Grizzly Bear, “will push Hip-Hop to go further”. The Brooklyn based indie rock band are classed as experimental, psychedelic indie rock and ‘Sleeping Ute’ is a brilliant reminder of their permeating, awe-inspiring lyric and sound.

Space to Grow

It has been a long running dream of mine to live in a warehouse/large loft space alongside lots of other like minded, ambitious, imaginative beings. The desire to nurture, share and showcase talent is amplified and boundaries that were there before seem to disappear. The combination of huge space, plus the variety and quality of creative juices available generates super fertile land for ideas to manifest into reality, bloom, mutate and grow. This documentary compiled with resident testimonies from a warehouse in Australia called Lanfranchis Memorial Discotheque reinforces my ideal and furthers my longing to become part of a community such as this.

Crystal Fighters Gig Vancouver

Tonight I am super excited to say that I will be scratching off a name that has been high on the list for some time now…Crystal Fighters! Yes people, this Spanish influenced British electro/indie band are hitting the wonderful audio heaven that is Fortune Sound Club. To me they are the musical cocktail mix winners for their use of culturally distinct instruments, floor shaking electronic beats and emotion stirring vocals. And they’re all pretty hot? Don’t ya think?

It has been a whole day and night since the Crystal Fighters gig and I am still buzzing from the impact of their INCREDIBLE show!!! The energy they influenced their fans to conduct is still seeping from my pores and the pulled muscle from my crowd surfing is throbbing hard. But is was all worth it. They blew me away!

“Sittin’ in the mornin’ sun”

It’s the morning here in Vancouver as I write this but thus far the sun has yet to grace me. Not to worry because I have this oldie, bad boy mix tape from Van based Vinnie The Squid, otherwise known as Techstyles, keeping my serotonin levels pumped up. This guy has been in the game for over 15 years and has developed this beautiful ability to blend hip-hop, brakes, 80’s, and classics just to mention a few, so effortlessly his raw talent becomes obvious. He is definitely on my gig wishlist.

Simian Mobile Disco – New Album – Unpatterns

Simian Mobile Disco’s third production ‘Unpatterns’ does just that and doesn’t follow the pattern of previous productions. Unpatterns is solely a classic minimal techno album. SMD’s preceding two albums featured vocals from big names in the music business. The electronic duo, James ford and Jas Shaw formed back in 2005 in London. The twosome are also famous for remixes with Muse, Klaxsons and The Go! Team. On a lesser known level, Ford produces on the side for indie artists such as Arctic Monkeys and Florence and the Machine. SMD have charted immeasurable success with Justice indie/dance remix, ‘We are your friends’. The duo are often criticised by the hardcore house/techno scene for relying too much on famous names in the mainstream. ‘Unpatterns’ has redeemed SMD with said critics and placed them back as serious players in the electronic field. Despite criticism, I have always been a fan of SMD and loved their underground hit ‘Hustler’ from their first album. Seeing SMD live at 2011’s Parklife in Melbourne was a dream come true – Honreaaaal. New Album, ‘Unpatterns’ won’t be for everyone with it’s move away from previous electro-pop form to a more minimal techno sound but it is a magnetic and polished audio production worthy of hearing. Check it out on Soundcloud!

On release since May 4th !

A Ruddy Free Spirit

The multi-talented iconic Auzzie musician Xavier Rudd’s seventh and latest album has produced his biggest selling single to date the beautifully haunting ‘Follow The Sun’. Rudd is a folkie singer, song-writer and multi-instrumentalist who has re-introduced the didgeridoo back into the mainstream supporting and spreading worldwide Australia’s often marginalised native history and sound. This song plays like a dream with his penchant for playing instruments simultaneously and I am a major fan since first hearing him play out on the office radio. I have since discovered two preceding albums including ‘Food in the Belly’ and ‘The Moth’ on my i-pod making for some easy listening on the train journey home from work.

Xavier’s ‘Spirit Bird’ tour starts on the 22nd of August in Australia. Tickets go on sale on the 21st of June. One to watch !
